TOEFL, a standard test is also known as “Test of English as a foreign language” is used to measure the skill of English language of non-native speakers wishing to study in an English-speaking country. This test was started on 1964 A.D. There are two types of TOEFL tests: Internet-based test (iBT) and Paper based standardized test (PBT). It is a trademark of the Educational Testing Service. It is one of the only two main English-language tests in the world.

The famed TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) lasts from 3 hours and 10 minutes to 4 hours and 20 minutes with a 10 minutes break in between. Internet-based Test consists four parts: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Reading test contains 3 to 5 passages, each with 12 to 14 questions and the duration is 60 to 80 minutes. Listening test contains 6 to 9 passages, each with 5 to 6 questions and lasts from 60 to 90 minutes. There is a mandatory break of 10 minutes after the listening test. Then comes Speaking test containing 6 tasks and lasting 20 minutes. Finally, there is a Writing test with 2 tasks and duration of 50 minutes.

The TOEFL iBT test marks are ranged from 0 to 120 points.

While Internet –based tests are the trendy ones, paper-based tests (PBT) are also offered in limited areas. The duration of Paper-based test ranges from 2 hours and 20 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes. PBT consists of 30 to 40 minutes Listening test, 25 minutes of Structure and Written Expression, 55 minutes of Reading Comprehension and 30 minutes Writing test.

The TOEFL PBT scores range from 310 to 677.

Though both iBT and PBT are available, iBT is more preferred. The scores of TOEFL tests are valid for 2 years. However, students are allowed to take the test every 12 days. The exam fees for iBT range from US$ 160 to US$ 250 varying upon the country, while the fee for PBT is US$ 160.
